Ideal moment for the increasing insertion of renewable sources in the Brazilian electrical matrix

According to the executive, the free market went through a moment of strong expansion last year. The number of special consumers who migrated to the free market more than doubled in 2016, and the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE), which is responsible for enabling and managing the commercialization of electricity in Brazil, reached a record number of consumer agents, today there are 4,314 free and special consumers. The prospects for the expansion of the Free Contracting Environment (ACL), which is the segment of the market in which electric energy purchase and sale operations are carried out, are still continuing this year, due to the beginning of the economic recovery, which May increase the volume of marketed energy.
As for renewable energies, the moment is for an increasing insertion of these sources into the Brazilian electricity matrix. Brazil undertook the commitment at COP 21 to further increase the participation of alternative sources in the matrix in order to achieve the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The free market is a great stimulus to renewable sources, since the special consumers should buy energy only from incentivized sources. Today, 52% of the clean energy contracts (wind, biomass and small hydropower plants) are carried out in the free market.
Because of the intense migration of special consumers, who can only buy energy from incentivized sources (solar, wind, biomass and small hydropower), the supply of energy from these sources needs to increase. Although the CCEE has already disclosed that there is sufficient ballast to accommodate these consumers, if migration continues at this pace, the supply of these sources must accompany the demand. Another challenge for these special consumers concerns the retailer, a CCEE agent that simplifies the operation within the Chamber of these consumers. Currently retailers are already qualified, but the segment needs to become attractive and less bureaucratic in order to become effective.
“There are 193 qualified marketers in CCEE, of which 71 are ABRACEEL members and represent 93.8% of the energy in the marketing segment. Currently, the ACL represents 26% of the country’s energy consumption, with 70% of the industry acquiring its energy in the free market”, concludes Medeiros.
The 6th EnerSolar + Brazil and the 7th Congress of Clean and Renewable Technologies for the Generation of Energy | Ecoenergy, will be held from May 23 to 25, 2017, at the São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo, and contribute to the development and qualification of the sector as they present the latest technologies, products and services aimed at the sector of sustainable, renewable and clean energy.
